Often seen flourishing in commons and hedgerows, the blackish bark that gives its name to the shrub twists and turn in every direction, making it very difficult to reach the centre without getting scratched. Grown widely for its hardiness and bitter and sour fruits that taste superb when preserved or turned into Sloe Gin. They have an intense plum taste.
