Native to southeastern part of North America. Medium-sized tree, 10-15 m high, with a short trunk that has forks in the crown. Wide spreading, umbel-shaped crown. Very large leaves, 15-20 cm long, sometimes with a few angular ones lobes. Orchid-like trumpet flowers in 15-20 cm high flower clusters, white with purple dots and yellow ocher stripes in the crown tube, June-July. Long, large, hanging capsules of 30-35 cm, which resemble pods, when ripening purplish brown. Park tree for nutritious, not wet soil in warm places. Paved areas are generally poorly tolerated. The large blade and the fairly brittle branches are sensitive to storms in summer.
