Crab Apple, also known as Wild Apple has been the subject of cultural importance for many centuries. Its wood is hard and fine grained, leaves are smooth and oblong with a downy underside. Flowers are up to an inch in diameter and arranged in clusters. White petals are beautifully tinted with a pink tint or streak. The almost spherical fruits are bright yellow and red, hanging an inch across are visually impressive to look at but so rich in malic acid, they are inedible for humans. An well-reasoned planting option for its abundance of tinted flowers during the spring, miniture apples during autumn and managable size.
