Originally native to large parts of Europe and UK. Well-known oak 25-30 m high. Broad, heavy crown with curvy branches. Bark up older age deeply grooved. Leaf variable in size and shape, irregular feather-lobed. Often turns brown-red to bronze-green. Leaf sedentary to almost unstalked. Acorns are stalked, 2-3 together. Deep rooting tree for heavier, nutrient-rich and moist, loamy soils and pants grounds. Tolerates little shade. Soil must be deeply rootable. In stream and river valleys, temporary inundation with flowing, silt-rich water occurs tree for good. Forest, avenue and park tree of great class. Can be under optimal soil conditions also grow in the pavement.
