US selection of the National Arboretum, developed around 1955. "Susan" belongs to the Little Girl Series ("Ann", "Betty", "Jane", "Judy", "Pinkie", "Randy", "Ricki" and "Susan"). Flowers a month later than stellata, making it less sensitive before the late frost. Shrub or small tree. Height 5-6 m, width 2-3 m. Scented
fuchsia-coloured calyx-shaped flowers with 6 slightly twisted petals, lighter in colour on the inside. The flowers appear just before the leaves. Sporadically there may be a second bloom in the middle of summer. Oval-shaped green leaves up to 20 cm long. Yellow-bronze autumn coloring. Grows well on rich, well-drained soils. Sun and partial shade preferable.
