Historically almonds prefer a mediterranean climate, however 'Robijn' has been developed for northern european growing conditions. It flowers slightly later than other almonds and the blossom has some frost resistance.
The species thrives best on sheltered and sunny positions. Robijn is self-fertile so no pollinator is required. However crops will be better if there are other almond trees nearby.
Robijn is moderately vigorous and will reach a height of 3m-4m over 10 years. Cropping usually starts when the tree is about 3 years old in optimum conditions.
As with plum trees (to which almonds are related) it is best to keep pruning to an absolute minimum.
