Origin Eastern North America. Up to 25 m high tree with wide, often somewhat flattened, rounded crown with strongly spreading, heavy main branches. Olive brown twigs. Large, deeply feather-lobed leaves with sharply pointed and coarse lobes serrated leaf margin, up to 16 cm long. Shiny dark green and quite stiff fairly long petiole. Beautifully rich autumn color from yellow-brown to orange-scarlet-red. Shade tolerant, naturally deep rooting. Undemanding oak type, for drier, poorer, not calcareous soils. Not resistant to sea wind, prone to breakage in the crown during heavy storms. Park tree, up avenue tree lighter soils on open roadsides. Mainly for landscape use.
