Tulip Trees are close relatives of the true Magnolias from which they differ in having their leaves truncate at the tips, and never pointed. The species was brought from America to England in the 17th century and is much valued for its beutiful form and fine bole. Bark has a pleasent scent and the wood is smooth and of fine grain. Leaves of the Tulip Tree are very characteristic, they are saddle shaped with a slender leaf-stalk two to four inches in length. Flowers produced in June and July are a tulip shape, giving the tree its name. The spectacle of a Tulip Tree is very striking, similarly to the bright yellow appearance of foliage during the autumnal months. A medium sized tree, it is perfect for medium-large gardens and communal spaces.
